Intelligems

Intelligems developer for hire

Intelligems is built so a Shopify merchant can run most tests without a developer, and for plenty of stores that holds. I get called in when it stops holding: prices that will not tag on a custom theme or page builder, a content test that needs real JavaScript rather than a copy swap, or a variant template that has to be written in Liquid. Available for direct briefs and as overflow capacity for CRO agencies running Intelligems programmes.

When you need a developer on Intelligems, and when you do not

Intelligems is a Shopify app for testing content, prices, discounts, shipping rates, checkout and post purchase upsells. Its own docs say the script is the only integration step for content, merchandising and shipping experiences, and on most stores that script goes in through the app embed toggle in the theme editor. If your roadmap is headline swaps, image changes, free shipping thresholds and theme or template tests built from templates you already have, you probably do not need me. Intelligems will also do the price test integration for you on request.

The work that needs a developer is narrower and easier to name. A content test where the variant is new behaviour rather than new copy. A variant template or theme that has to be written in Liquid before the test can start. Prices that sit in places the tagging tool cannot reach cleanly, such as a page builder layout, a quiz or a custom cart. A headless storefront, where the @intelligems/headless package replaces the theme script and the integration moves into your React code.

How builds work on Intelligems

Price tests are mostly configuration and theme work, not variant code. Every visible price has to be tagged with a query selector through the Intelligems widget, across the homepage, collections, product pages, recommendations, search and quizzes. Where a price is highlighted as not recognised, the theme needs a data-product-id or data-variant-id attribute added to the element, and per unit or discounted prices take a data-price-multiplier attribute. Cart prices are left untagged, because on the default integration Intelligems charges the right amount through a Shopify Cart Transform Function. The price tagging guide covers the selector types.

Content tests that need code use the Styles and JavaScript panel, set per test group, with an injection timing of Immediately, After Page Load or a fixed Delay. Intelligems notes that this code runs once per page and often before the page has rendered, so I never assume the target element exists. When theme code outside the test needs to know which group a visitor is in, I read it from the window.igData API once Intelligems has loaded:

// Theme code that reacts to a visitor's Intelligems test group
const applyGroup = () => {
  const group = window.igData?.user.getTestGroup("YOUR_EXPERIMENT_ID");
  if (!group || group.isControl) return;
  document.documentElement.classList.add("ig-variant");
};

if (window.igData) applyGroup();
else window.addEventListener("ig:ready", applyGroup, { once: true });

getTestGroup returns null when the experiment is not live or the visitor has no assignment, so the control experience is the fallback by default. The API is documented in the Intelligems JavaScript API reference.

What to watch for on Intelligems

Most of what breaks on Intelligems comes from the theme, not the tool. The script is installed per theme, and a new theme starts with the app embed switched off, so a theme test can quietly run one arm without Intelligems at all. Page builders such as GemPages often render through their own layout file, for example theme.gempages.liquid, and if the script is only in theme.liquid the test never loads on those pages. The script itself should not be given async or defer, because Intelligems handles its own anti flicker and the vendor warns that doing so causes flashing.

Price tests carry their own risks. Shopify allows one Cart Transform Function per line item, so native bundles, and any other app holding that slot, cannot be price tested on the Functions integration. When a test raises prices, Intelligems sets the Shopify price to the highest price in the test, which is the price Google Shopping, Facebook and Instagram shops, and automatically converted Shopify Markets prices then show. The Shop Pay instalments widget keeps using the catalogue price. And a price test running across a theme test is fragile, because the price tags have to exist in both themes. The price experiences FAQ explains each of these, and I check them before a price test goes live.

The engineering that stays the same everywhere

Whatever the platform, my variant code handles route changes on single page storefronts, hides only the elements it changes, sets framework inputs so React notices, waits for late elements and keeps accessibility intact. That is covered once on the A/B test developer page, with detail in stopping A/B test flicker and accessible A/B test variants.

How pricing works

Submit a brief and you get an hour estimate back within one UK business day, with a total you approve before any work starts. A single test usually takes between 2 and 20 build hours: a copy or layout change sits near the bottom of that range, a new component or a multi step flow near the top. Regular volume earns a discounted rate, and there is no lock-in: one-off builds are as welcome as a weekly commitment.

Common questions

Do I need a developer to run Intelligems tests?

Often not. Content, merchandising and shipping tests only need the Intelligems script on your theme, which the app embed handles, and Intelligems offers to do the price test integration for you. A developer earns their fee when a variant needs custom JavaScript, when a new template or theme has to be built, or when your theme, page builder or headless storefront does not fit the standard integration.

Can you work on a headless or Hydrogen store running Intelligems?

Yes. Headless storefronts use the @intelligems/headless package instead of the theme script, so the integration lives in your React code. I build the variant components and the group checks there, and QA them against every test group before launch.
